ECTS CREDIT ALLOCATION

European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a significant tool which has been developed in order to solve the problems that prevent the mobility and recognition of universities due to the presence of differences in higher education systems of different countries. ECTS course credits are based on the amount of competency that students gain in a lesson and are calculated according to the work load of a student in order to gain that particular competency. ECTS is defined as a credit system in which the workload of a student is taken into consideration in order for him/her to achieve the goals being described as the expected learning outputs and competency of a degree program or a course. ECTS was first utilized the scope of the Erasmus program. Its goals were to transfer credits in mobility activities; yet, later was used as a credit accumulation system. It is one of the most important tools of the Bologna Process. An ECTS credit is a value based on the workload of a student, which includes all the work of the student (theoretical courses, practices, seminars, individual studies, test and examinations, assignments etc.) in order to complete a course successfully. This value indirectly shows the amount of the total workload a lesson covers, for an academic year in a higher education institution to be completed full-time. ECTS credit for an academic year is determined to be 60. Equivalently, for the credit value, the workload of a student is anticipated to be 1500 to 1800 hours. 1 ECTS is determined to be equal to 25 to 30 hours of work and study.

Before the determination of ECTS credits, the credits of mutual lessons at the level of universities and faculties were ascertained by a council which consists of ECTS coordinators of the faculties.

Afterwards, for the determination of the ECTS credits of individual courses of the departments, the credits of the mutual lessons at the level of universities and faculties were decided by a council consisting of ECTS coordinators of the faculties.

Later, the ECTS credits of the individual courses of departments were determined by the studies of a council involving the academic members of each department. The student polls about the calculations of the workload have not been initiated.

The ECTS credit of a course is evaluated as follows: 16 weeks, including the exam period, 4 hours of theoretical courses, 1 hour of tutorial with guidance and homework for each week, quiz, individual or group problem solving and discussion of the problems during the practical hours, preparation and presentation/exhibition of term project as a report or design, open book midterm and final examinations.
